These small blankets or throws are handwoven by members of a weaving cooperative on footlooms in 100% natural wool from sheep herds that are descendants of the Churro breed brought from Spain in the 1500s. The sheep continue to be raised in larger herds by husbandmen in Guatemala’s western highlands. The sheep farming and the weaving of these "ponchos" is considered an ancestral tradition that generates income, preserves cultural identity and attracts tourism to the region.
The Guatemalan Ministry of Economy granted the cooperative with the White Seal, recognizing and highliting medium sized enterprises that demonstrate a commitment to quality, social responsibility and the promotion of local product consumption.
The process to obtain the wool has been kept from generation to generation. The wool is clipped by hand with forge-made scissors and every succeeding step from washing, carding, sorting, weaving, and felting the blankets is done entirely by hand.
In some designs we use only the natural colors of the wool, which are ecru, gray, and dark brown. For other designs we choose colors from a stock palette produced by the same weaver’s cooperative using the highest quality aniline dyes available.
You can use them as a throw, bedspread, blanket and even as a coat for everyday use at home. Available in a wide range of colorful stripes that add charm to them, they are thick, soft and warm.
Measures: Throw is 67 x 56 inch, 2" fringes
Care: use a gentle liquid laundry detergent wth warm water on gentle cycle in washing machine. Wash separately from towels or bedding items. Do not exceed 30C washing temperature. Or wash on a wool special cycle.
Set the minimum spin speed or turn it off completely. Tumble dry is not recommended, better dry flat to prevent the fibers from stretching.
