Wool Throws: These small blankets or throws are handwoven by members of a weaving cooperative on footlooms in 100% natural wool from sheep herds that are descendants of the Churro breed brought from Spain in the 1500s. The sheep continue to be raised in small herds by husbandmen in Guatemala’s western highlands. The wool is clipped by hand with forge-made scissors, and every succeeding step from washing, carding, sorting, weaving, and felting the blankets is done entirely by hand. In some designs we use only the natural colors of the wool, which are ecru, gray, and dark brown. For other designs we choose colors from a stock palette produced by the same weaver’s cooperative using the highest quality aniline dyes available.
