For many years our boys’ godmother vacationed with us. We would meet her at the Cancún airport and drive south to Akumal. The first thing we would do is make a common purse for shared expenses, a pushke. All New Yorkers know from pushkes, it’s a Yiddish word that means can. You put away your spare change in a can against an occasion to spend it. This is our nostalgic celebration of the pushke in a green-trending confetti with the word’s downward slant mimicking the spill of cash into the purse. We hope the metal snap frame suggests Europe in the 1920s.
