Stoneware Etruscan horse candleholders: Although they are made by the excellent stoneware potters of San Antonio Palopó, these horse candleholders originated more than sixty years ago in Chinautla, a village near Guatemala. The original design was produced in terracotta and was consequently very fragile, but our parents had handed several intact horses down to us and we decided to reproduce them in stoneware. We have called them Etruscan horses because their style is very different from all other representations of horses in Mesoamerican art and craft and is most reminiscent of Etruscan art.
