Stoneware cat creamer and sugar bowl: These stoneware cats are mold-made from handmade sculptures, handpainted and glazed, then fired at extremely high temperatures in small, artisan-made kilns. San Antonio Palopo is a Cakchiquel Indian village on the banks of Lake Atitlan. The artisans are young men and women who learned their craft from the legendary American potter Ken Edwards, who revolutionized Mexican pottery-making in the 1950s through 90s. The artisans own their production centers. Cats in San Antonio, as elsewhere in the world, are excellent mouse catchers, and are much valued for their own craft and finishing in this activity. Ken Edwards brought stoneware production to San Antonio as a response to the town's extreme poverty coupled with nearby clay deposits and the native brilliance demonstrated by its young people. Contrary to most centers of ceramic production around the world, San Antonio's potters are young and only beginning to realize their full potential.
