These maracas are made of young gourds taken from the Morro tree (Fam. Bignoniacea) on the high arid plains of Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. The Mayan Achí ethnic group has one of the strongest dance-drama traditions in the country and the sharp purring rattle of maracas make them an integral accoutrement of dancers. They are handpainted and waxed.
