Brocade is handwoven on Backstrap looms in Guatemala by Maya female artisans as a family tradition and perfected over more than a century. The loom is very basic, just a few small pieces of wood, but with this simple tool the master weavers create vibrant and intricate textile art works. This technique is also called Supplementary Weaving. Supplementary weaving is a decorative technique in which additional threads are woven into a textile to create an ornamental pattern in addition to the ground pattern. The supplementary weave can be of the warp or of the weft. On the supplementary of the warp weaving, an additional set of threads are incorporated in the warp to create the design. On the supplementary of the weft weaving an extra set of threads are woven into the weft between two regular weft threads to create an ornamental pattern in addition to the ground weave. One can also weave metallic threads to form the pattern to create astonishing textiles.
