Handembroidered following traditional techniques used for Mayan women "cortes" or skirts fabrics of Nahualá, these original cosmetic bags are no doubt one a kind. No two are the same. For too long companies have purchased these skirt fabrics (and every other vintage textile available in Guatemala) to "upcycle" into apparel and personal accessories. They are undeniably handsome, but since they have been worn they can be purchased much more cheaply than their replacement cost and therefore do not incentivize young weavers to keep weaving.
Embroidered on a newly weaved Nahualá fabric, cotton inner lining, brass zipper and a multicolor cotton thread tassel pull, we added an upcycled cotton canvas also made in Guatemala on the back panel.
